Biography

I am a registered speech and language therapist experienced in working with children who have speech, language, and communication problems across a range of settings from private practice to public settings in Ireland and New Zealand.

  • Adapting the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) (Gagarina et al, 2019 in particular) to Irish
  • Narrative enrichment for preschool and school aged children
  • Dynamic assessment of Irish syntax
  • Dynamic assessment of English morphology in multilingual children
  • Representations of people with communication impairments in mass media
  • Representations of people with communication impairments in professional report writing
  • Children's insights into living with speech sound disorders using children's drawings
  • Teachers' experiences of multilingual children in the classroom
  • SLTs' experiences of working with multilingual families
  • SLT for transgender people
Research Collaborations
Local: 
  • My colleague Dr Clare Carroll and I are working on representations of people with dementia in Irish broadsheet newspapers.
  • Together with my colleague Dr. Stanislava Antonijevic-Elliot, we are adapting MAIN (Gagarina et al., 2019) to Irish.
  • Together with my colleagues Dr. Stanislava Antonijevic-Elliot & Dr. Rena Lyons, we are working on a narrative enrichment programme for pre-schoolers and school aged children.
  • I am a member of the Academic Clinical Alliance with colleagues in NUI Galway and a range of HSE regions working on less-biased ways of assessing language in multilingual children including non-word and sentence repetition tasks.

  • I am working with Dr. Ciara O' Toole in UCC on the development of a dynamic assessment task for Irish syntax.
  • I am working with SLT colleagues Rachel Moore, HSE National Gender Service, Rebecca McConnell HSE, & Linda Coyle, Independent SLT on a project exploring SLTs' experiences of working with transgender clients.

  • I am working with Professor Nicole Muller in UCC & Professor Beth Armtstrong Edith Cowan University, Australia, and Dr Rena Lyons in NUI Galway on agency in SLT report-writing.
