Biography

Diarmuid O’Donovan studied medicine in Galway and public health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He completed training in general practice and public health medicine in England. He lived in Africa for seven years where he worked in hospitals, rural health centres, a research centre, and with refugees.  He continues to work with colleagues in several countries in Africa on research, education and policy. His research interests include health equity, reproductive and child health, alcohol and substance misuse, violence, and environmental health and sustainable development.  He is regional Director of Public Health for the west of Ireland in the Health Service Executive and Senior Lecturer in Social and Preventive Medicine at NUIG where he coordinates undergraduate teaching on public health and on global health and development. 

Research Interests

Research interests include: health inequalities, health policy, communicable disease control and environmental health, sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS, substance misuse, health and human rights, maternal and child health, global health and development.
