Cardiac Nursing Management

This module aims to provide nurses with the knowledge and skills to be competent, safe and effective carers of patients presenting with cardiac health problems. Nurses need to understand of current evidence based practice and guidelines relating to cardiac disease management. This module provides an overview of current practice in cardiac management of patients/clients and discusses the role of nurses in ensuring delivery of prompt, effective and safe care to this group of patients.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will understand:
- The significance of cardiac disease in Ireland/the risk factors associated with coronary artery disease and initiatives aimed at reducing risk factors
- The role of the nurse in acute cardiac care/patient assessment and immediate management
- The concepts of secondary prevention and cardiac rehabilitation
- Medical management of acute heart disease including drug therapy, coronary intervention and surgery/the role of the multidisciplinary team in cardiac care
- Provide leadership to junior staff in the area
- Critically evaluate research findings related to cardiac disease
- Understand relevant guidelines/framework for the management of coronary heart disease/ACS
Module content is subdivided into four units
Unit 1: Cardiac Risk Factors/Assessment
This unit examines the process of cardiovascular assessment from a nursing perspective, risk factor assessment and diagnostic testing associated with cardiac disorders.
Unit 2: Management of the Patient/Client with Coronary Artery Disease
This unit provides an overview of current trends in management of patients/clients with coronary artery disease and discusses the role of nurses in ensuring delivery of prompt, effective and safe care to this group of patients.
Unit 3: Management of the Patient/Client with Cardiac Failure
This unit explores heart failure as a significant and growing worldwide public health problem and outlines the importance of the nursing role in primary health care, prevention; cardiac rehabilitation and the on-going management of patients/clients with heart failure.
Unit 4: Management of the Patient/Client Requiring Cardiac Intervention/Surgery
This unit review common interventions for cardiac conditions including: angiography: PCI; Stent; Pacemaker; ICD; Valuoplasty; TAVI.
Target Market
All nurses managing patients with cardiac conditions primary/secondary care.
Prerequisite
Applicants must be on the live register of NMBI.
