Study Abroad

Consider our international exchange opportunities

We encourage all Science and Engineering students to consider participating in one of our international exchange opportunities.

For academic year 2021-22 our College and Erasmus exchanges will be available only in semester 2 (January - May 2022) to allow clarity about the ongoing pandemic situation.

The application process is now open and Information for Applicants to CoSE Outgoing Exchanges 2021 and the CoSE Study Abroad Application Form 21-22 can be downloaded.  Completed applications must be sent to claire.mitchell@nuigalway.ie by Friday June 11th,  5pm.

Most students take part in exchanges during the 3rd year of their degree. Candidates for exchanges are usually expected to have at least an upper 2.1 honours average in years 1-2 and have experience of living independently.

A semester studying abroad substitutes for learning in Galway so students complete equivalent coursework at the host and receive a grade reflecting their achievement that contributes to their NUI Galway degree.

‌ Application Process

For academic year 2021-22 our College and Erasmus exchanges will be available only in semester 2 (January-May 2022) to allow clarity about the ongoing pandemic situation. Applications will be invited in late April 2021, and interviews for most partners will take place in early September 2021.

Applicants must have an overall average of 65% at the first sitting in their first year examinations to be eligible to apply
The selection process will include shortlisting and an interview.

International Host Partners

The College of Science and Engineering is normally able to offer opportunities with the following partners.
Students remain registered for their NUI Galway degree so there is no tuition fee at the host.
Travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of students, although some funding is provided that varies by host.

Erasmus Exchanges

“Erasmus” is a specific scheme for student exchange to host universities within Europe with whom we have agreements. This is separate from the College Exchanges outside Europe listed above.

Erasmus Taught Semesters:

The College of Science and Engineering  has Erasmus exchange agreements with a number of partner universities. This enables selected students to spend 1-2 semesters hosted at the partner university. A strong record of academic achievement at NUI Galway and appropriate language skills are required.

Further information about Erasmus is available from the International Office Erasmus Outgoing Students pages.

Applications and opportunities for Erasmus Taught Semesters in EU use the same selection process as College Exchanges outside EU. Fields of study and hosts where exchanges may be possible are listed under Erasmus Coordinators in the most recent Visiting Student Handbook (available from International Office) during semester 2 of your second year.

Erasmus Internships:

Certain programmes such as Biotechnology maintain Erasmus agreements enabling internships. These are usually restricted and notified directly to students within the relevant programmes.
