Biography

Dr Paraic Ryan graduated with First Class Honours in Civil Engineering here at NUI Galway in 2006. He completed an MSc in Civil Engineering at Trinity College Dublin, graduating with Distinction in 2007, before working in industry for a number of years with Tobin Consulting Engineers. Dr Ryan returned to Trinity College Dublin in 2009 to undertake a PhD in the “Assessment of the Marine Durability of Self-Compacting Concrete using Experimental Testing and Probabilistic Modelling”. Having completed his PhD in 2012, Dr Ryan moved to Australia to take up a position at the Centre for Infrastructure Performance and Reliability at The University of Newcastle, Australia. Dr Ryan took up his current position as Lecturer in Civil Engineering at NUIG in August 2015. He also holds the position of Conjunct Research Fellow at the University of Newcastle, Australia.

Research

Dr Paraic Ryan’s research activities span a range of areas including: (i) probabilistic and uncertainty modelling, (ii) climate change adaptation engineering, (iii) concrete deterioration, (iv) vulnerability assessment of energy infrastructure, (v) probabilistic life-cycle cost-benefit analysis, (vi) structural reliability, (vii) timber deterioration modelling, (viii) water/energy resource nexus. To date Paraic has authored 12 international journal papers in these areas, and currently acts as peer reviewer for seven international journals. Dr Ryan is a member of Engineers Ireland and the Australian Wind Engineering Society and the International Society of Protective Structures.

Teaching

Dr Paraic Ryan’s teaching responsibilities at NUI Galway include 2nd Year Strength of Materials and 3rd Year Design of Structures II and 4th year Design of Structures III. Dr Ryan is also responsible for developing and delivering a new masters module in Reliability and Risk Engineering across all engineering disciplines at NUI Galway. Dr Ryan also lectured on the Theory of Structures II course at the University of Newcastle Australia. Dr Ryan was nominated by his students for the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence in the 2015/2016 academic year.
