Programmes on Offer
The programmes of study currently offered in the discipline Home Economics are:
- Bachelor of Education (Home Economics and Biology)
- Bachelor of Education (Home Econinics and Religious Education)
- Bachelor of Education (Home Economics and Irish)
Graduates of these Level 8 (NFQ) Honours Degree programmes are qualified to teach Junior Certificate Home Economics, Leaving Certificate Home Economics and either Biology, Religious Education or Irish at higher level. Graduates gain a professional and academic qualification which enables them to also pursue careers in a wide range of fields including Education, Home Economics and chosen subject area.
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Nutrition, Food and Business Management)
A 4-year Bachelor of Applied Science programme which prepares students for the challenges of producing foods safe for human consumption, developing more nutritious, healthier food options for dynamic, ever-changing markets.
- Bachelor of Arts (Home Economics)
This four-year, Level 8 (NFQ), degree is designed to attract applicants who are passionate about Home Economics and aspire to be Home Economists advocating for sustainable health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. This programme consists of the three core disciplines within Home Economics: Food Studies; Textiles, Fashion, Design; and Family Resource Management and these are evident in every year of the programme. There are opportunities for graduates to be employed by national or international governmental or non-governmental agencies focusing on family and child wellbeing; consumer advocacy; and health promotion.
- Master of Education (Home Economics)
This part-time, two-year Level9 (NFQ) M.Ed. (Home Economics) programme facilitates students to understand and critically evaluate contemporary educational policy and practices in Home Economics / Home Economics education and apply relevant knowledge, theory and research findings in order to inform and enhance their professional practice.
- Master of Science (Food Innovation)
The Master of Science (Food Innovation) enables students to gain relevant scientific and operational management knowledge to advance them in a career in the food industry.
- Structured PhD (Home Economics)
This Structured PhD is a four-year full-time or six-year part-time programme and will be of interest to Home Economists, nationally and internationally, who want to take the next step in developing their expertise and strengthening the research base upon which Home Economics is built. Furthermore, prospective entrants from aligned and cognate disciplines such as the social sciences are most welcome to apply.
- Master of Arts (Conflict Management)
This Level 9 (NFQ) programme challenges traditional views of conflict, and encourages students to develop a reflective, theory-based approach to the application of conflict management skills, and in particular mediation. Graduates also attain accreditation to practice as a Certified Mediator by the Mediator’s Institute of Ireland. - Postgraduate Certificate (Mediation and Conflict Resolution)
This Postgraduate Certificate programme examines views of conflict, and encourages students to develop a reflective, theory-based approach to the application of mediation skills. - Postgraduate Diploma (Science for Primary School Educators)
This programme meets the professional and technical needs of teachers currently employed in primary school education, who may wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in science, the teaching of science and enables them to obtain a formal qualification in teaching science at primary school level.
