Lecturer (BAPME) / Course Coordinator (M.Ed)
Sonya Coffey is a lecturer and researcher within the School of Home Economics. She is a graduate of St Angela’s College, Sligo with a B.Ed. degree in Home Economics and Biology and an MSc in Environmental Health and Risk Management (specialising in food safety). Sonya is coordinator of the online Master of Education (Home Economics). Sonya has previously been Director of School Placement from 2010-2016. Sonya was a member of the working group on the Teaching Council, Guidelines on School Placement (2013). Sonya has previously held the position of chairperson on the Voluntary Board of Management for Sligo Family Resource Centre from 2017-2020 and secretary prior to that for 4 years. Sonya has worked on several educational interventions to initiate dietary change and positively influence eating habits of both targeted and non-targeted groups and their families within the community from 2013-present. These interventions have received funding from the National Lottery.
Sonya’s research interests include Home Economics; educational interventions to initiate dietary change; food literacy; scientific literacy; enablers and barriers to teaching Home Economics and Home Management Advisory services.
