Edel is Head of the Department of Nursing, Health Sciences and Disability Studies. She qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1986 and specialised in critical care working in the UK, North America and Ireland. A growing interest in education led to the post of Nurse Tutor in Sligo General Hospital in 1996 with subsequent posts of lecturer; programme director and Head of Department in St Angelas College. Edel’s teaching research and management activity focuses on providing education that enables nurses to contribute powerfully to the health and wellbeing of the population. She endeavours through her work to provide a foundation that allows students and lecturers to apply professional knowledge, altruism and practical wisdom to their practice. Her aim is to arm students and lecturers with professional pride and to support them to be leaders in health care provision and education where they advocate for the needs of people/services users/ patients and their profession.
Edel’s research interests include Nurse Education; Professional Internationalisation, Digital Learning and Mental Health. She is a reviewer for the peer reviewed Journal Nurse Education Today. She has supervised students on the successful completion of the Master Health Sciences. Research projects Edel is currently involved in are:
