Lecturer Postgraduate Disability Studies

Peter started with St. Angela's College in 2008 and has lectured on QQI Level 8 and 9 while also supervising students completing their MA thesis. Peter has designed modules for Disability & Health BA and the College's new Disability Equality Post-Grad and Masters. As a long time disabled activist, artist and academic, Peter works with Independent Living Movement Irl. (ILMI) as their cross border social inclusion Project Manager and Coordinator.

Peter graduated from Trinity College in the late 1980s with an English Honours degree & MA and followed this with an MA in Film and TV Studies at DCU and a Higher Diploma in Adult & Community Education from Maynooth College. He also has higher Dips. in Disability Studies and Arts European Mentoring. Peter also lectured at Sligo IT since 2004 and has written-up their QQ1-Level 8 Modules promoting a need for an Emancipatory-Advocacy way of thinking & practice for & with disabled people. 

In the mid 1990’s Peter established THE WORKHOUSE, a disability consultancy company involved in equality/mentor/arts training in Ireland, Europe and Asia.  As Development & Policy Worker with Forum of People With Disabilities, Peter worked in New York in early Noughties at the United Nations on developing NGO community development inputs into 2007 UN CRPD.

Peter’s associate residency at the Irish national Theatre Abbey Theatre (2000 to 2003) facilitated the development of a disability arts and drama policy and promoted a vision for the National Cultural Institutes’ access with disabled people as audience, creators and producers.

In terms of linking social model led disability equality with effective practice on the ground, Peter moved from Forum of 'People with Disabilities' in the 90s & Noughties to design and deliver nationwide mainstream programmes such as Making-Choices and Practical Self-Advocacy with Community Support Consultant with Disability Equality Specialist Support Agency (DESSA).

Peter is also a writer/dramatist, documentary & film maker, including Executive-Producer on LOVE LEITRIM'S 2020 Anti-Fracking documentary. Peter also enjoys extreme trekking (Everest Base camp 2019) and has two 'adult' children Deirbhile and Oisin and lives in Dromahair, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.

Peter’s writing and research interests include Disability Studies in Ireland.
