At NUI Galway, we believe that the best learning takes place when you apply what you learn in a real world context. That's why many of our courses include work placements or community projects.
NUI Galway’s Active* Consent programme supports young people and those that are important to them (teachers, parents, college staff and policy makers) in building their knowledge of consent as a key component of positive sexual health and well-being.
We create original Irish data-led consent education training resources including workshops, eLearning modules, drama, videos, and social media campaigns for colleges, secondary schools and sports organisations. We do so in consultation with young people and other stakeholders, evaluating our resources and updating our data on an ongoing basis.
The Active* Consent programme believes that the most effective form of consent education supports young people’s sexual health and agency, and is taught through a sex-positive lens that honours their choices - whether or not they choose to become sexually active.
The Consent Hub
The Consent Hub was launched in January 2022 and is the first-ever publicly available online national resource on consent awareness and learning in Ireland.
The hub was developed by Active* Consent in partnership with the Department of Justice and the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation & Science.
The hub hosts a variety of consent educational tools and awareness-raising resources, including an eLearning module on sexual violence and harassment; a staff awareness video; answers to frequently asked questions on consent; and more. Visit the Consent Hub:https://www.consenthub.ie/
The Active* Consent programme has conducted research into young people’s sexual experiences and attitudes towards consent since 2013. With this data, Active* Consent creates original consent education and training resources including:
- eLearning Modules
- Educational and Awareness Videos
- Original Dramas and Film
- Social Media Campaigns
- A Consent Hub
- Green* Light Podcast
- Parents Seminars
- Teacher Trainings
- Facilitator Trainings
- Downloadable Posters
Visit https://www.consenthub.ie/ for access to these resources and for more information on training opportunities.
Active* Consent grew out of an existing collaboration between Psychology and Drama and Theatre Studies at NUI Galway which had the initial aim of changing student experiences and college responses around sexual consent. We sought to make this change by conducting research and devising workshops, theatre pieces, and short films in response.
With the support of the Lifes2good Foundation, four years (2019-2023) of research and implementation for the Active* Consent programme was launched at NUI Galway in 2019 led by Pádraig MacNeela, Charlotte McIvor, Siobhán O’Higgins, and Kate Dawson. This support allows Active* Consent to expand our work with third level institutions and to work with secondary schools and sports organisations. With additional funding from Rethink Ireland, the Higher Education Authority, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, The Department of Justice, and NUI Galway, Active* Consent has continued to grow since 2019.
Lifes2good Foundation is a Galway-based registered charity. Founded in 2017, L2GF’s primary focus, for the first five years of its existence, is on women and children in situations of vulnerability. In the next strategic plan (2023 – 2027) there will be a pivot towards supporting more programmes focused on environmental issues, as well as continuing to support the best educative work that the foundation has been doing. The foundation supports preventative as well as remedial strategies. The charity subscribes to a multifaceted approach and supports projects, programmes, and initiatives that focus on attitudinal and behavioural change.
Rethink Ireland is a non-profit organisation that provides grants, supports and other development resources to charities and social enterprises that make a difference in Irish society. Active* Consent is an awardee of Rethink Ireland’s Arts to Impact fund, which has supported initiatives that use the arts and culture as a means to create positive social impact in Ireland.
Founded in 1845, NUI Galway is ranked among the top 300 universities in the world, according to Times Higher Education and QS World University rankings. It has supported the development of the Active* Consent programme as part of its commitment to values of respect and openness.
