Creating static links to YouTube videos

This involves using a 'Video: static video' content type. This may not be enabled on your section so if you don't see it, you will need to request it addition via the service desk (https://servicedesk.nuigalway.ie).

This content type requires that you have a thumbnail image. Most video host services automatically generate a thumbnail for you. In this case, I visited YouTube and then right-clicked on the thumbnail to save the image onto my computer so that I could later upload it to the media library, when creating the static video link.

When adding a 'Video: static video' content type, there are two things to remember:

1. In the field labeled 'You-tube URL', you can only enter the web address of a YouTube video.  It just requires the youtube links in the format http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={VIDEO_ID}. Videos on other video hosting services (e.g. blip TV) won't work here.  There is a seperate content item for blip.tv videos, and for videos, hosted elsewhere, you can use the 'PHP Code Only' content type if you have its embed code.

2. When selecting a thumbnail, you must choose one that has been uploaded as an 'Image Path (CSS)'. If you accidentally uploaded your thumbnail as an 'Image (Foreground'), you can change it by:

  1. Find it in the Media Library
  2. Click on the Actions button and choose 'Edit'
  3. Under Advanced options go to the Media type field
  4. Click on the arrow and choose Image Path (CSS) from the dropdown menu
  5. Click Save Changes
  6. You will be returned to the Media Library
  7. Select the image to add it to your Content.
