Inform-YSP Youth Advisory Group
WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT?
The Health Research Board in Ireland recently provided funding for a new project exploring youth mental health and suicide ideation, entitled “Informing Youth Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Promotion (Inform - YSP)”. The project aims to explore the risk and protective factors for youth mental health and suicidality, by examining survey responses provided by thousands of teenagers in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.
WHO IS LEADING THE PROJECT?
The project is being led by the UNESCO Child & Family Research Centre and School of Psychology at NUI Galway in collaboration with Planet Youth, the HSE National Office for Suicide Prevention, HSE West and the National Suicide Research Foundation.
WHY SET-UP A YOUTH ADVISORY PANEL?
A youth advisory group/panel is being set-up, to ensure that youth’s opinions are consulted at each stage of the project, and to help ensure that the research is relevant to young people and reflects their real-life experiences.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE YOUTH ADVISORY PANEL?
The youth advisory panel will be asked to advise and provide feedback to the project leaders about the proposed research and how best to communicate the findings to other young people or the general public.
HOW OFTEN WILL THE YOUTH ADVISORY PANEL MEET?
Members of the youth advisory panel will be asked to attend approximately 6 meetings, which may be online or in-person depending on members’ preferences. Each meeting will last for 1-2 hours and members will be provided with a contribution for their time.
WHO CAN JOIN THE YOUTH ADVISORY PANEL?
Any young person who is aged between 18-22 years and is interested in promoting positive mental health and reducing suicide ideation among young people can apply to become part of this panel. You don’t need to have any special knowledge or experience of youth mental health issues –an interest in the topic is enough.
HOW CAN I APPLY?
If you are interested in joining the Youth Advisory Panel, please send an email to Gillian Browne at cfrc@nuigalway.ie with your name, contact details, and a brief summary of why you would like to be part of this group (200 words max). Applications should be submitted by 5pm on April 29th 2022. Please include the title ‘Youth Advisory Panel’ in the subject line of your email. In deciding the final group composition, we will be seeking a mix of genders, backgrounds, etc. so please be aware that not all applicants will be offered a place on the group.
