Language, Terminology and Representation Relating to Ireland’s Institutions Historically Known as ‘Mother and Baby Homes’, ‘County Homes’ and related Institutions

The aim of this project is to examine and highlight the stigmatising and labelling language that has been used in the past and to suggest a set of alternative terms for future use. In addition to learning from the literature and practice in other international contexts, we wish to hear directly from survivors and/or persons directly affected by the institutions discussed in the final report from the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes, published in January 2021.

This project sponsored by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth through the Irish Research Council. It is action 13 in the Action Plan announced by Government in response to the recommendations made by the Commission of Investigation, and its outcomes will be monitored in the reporting arrangements for the Plan, and feed into the implementation of other actions.
