PART OF THE GALWAY EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL, MAY 8-11: The Swedish Flagship Kronan, the Royal Crown, was in its time one of the world’s largest warships. She capsized, exploded and sank off the island of Öland in the Baltic Sea in 1676. Of the 842 men in the crew only about 40 were saved. The wreck was located in the 1980s and is since then excavated each summer season by underwater archaeologists. Among the more than 30,000 objects that have been found so far are several musical instruments and other sound tools, intact or in fragmented form. Strings, winds and percussion are all represented. The musical instruments excavated from the Kronan wreck form the basis of a concert programme that also includes commentaries. The repertoire of the performance is music that was in vogue in Sweden during the second half of the 17th century. Tickets: E15 / E12 concession / E5 under 16s Info and Booking: http://www.galwayearlymusic.com
