Discipline Welcome Message

Welcome to Geography at NUI Galway. We are part of the School of Geography and Archaeology. At BA undergraduate level we offer a range of modules that reflect contemporary societal issues and concerns.  Climate change, environment and natural resource management, urban and rural development and geopolitical events provide the key focus for our undergraduate teaching.

At Masters level we offer three taught programmes: The MA in Environment, Society and Development; the MA in Rural Sustainability, and the MSc in Marine and Coastal Environments.

We also host a vibrant postgraduate community of PhD and M.Litt students engaged in contemporary geographical research issues.

Our ethos is to combine a thorough grounding in Geography as an academic subject with a strong field-based focus to teaching and learning, and emphasis on developing independent research skills that are relevant to a wide range of careers.

Geography at NUIG has a strong national and international reputation for excellence in research, and its staff has had consistent success in securing competitive research funding from a wide range of sources.  Our research interests are broadly defined through four key research clusters:

Our Palaeoenvironmental Research Unit (PRU) links Geography and Archaeology in applied research. Our teaching programmes reflect our active research profiles and expertise, and deliver leading-edge critically-informed knowledge on key geographical questions.
