Biography

Curriculum Vitae -

Brian Hughes is a Professor of Psychology, with a specialism in stress psychophysiology. He is the current President of the international Stress and Anxiety Research Society (STAR). He has also served as Director of the Centre for Research on Occupational and Life Stress (CROLS) and is a former President of the Psychological Society of Ireland. He is the Dean of International Affairs at NUI Galway and a member of the university’s Academic Management Team.

Professor Brian Hughes received his PhD and BA degrees from NUI Galway, and an Ed.M. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His research and publications have focused on psychological stress (particularly its impact on cardiovascular psychophysiology, immunity, and health) and on psychosocial moderators of stress processes (such as social support, cognition, and personality). His work on how the human cardiovascular response habituates across repeated stress exposures has been extensively cited. He also writes widely on the psychology of empiricism and of empirically disputable claims, especially as they pertain to science, health, and medicine.

Professor Hughes has held visiting academic appointments at the Universities of Missouri (USA), Leiden (Netherlands), and Birmingham (UK), at  King's College London (UK), and at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is the current President of the international Stress and Anxiety Research Society (STAR), and sits on the editorial boards of a number of international journals of psychophysiology, health psychology, and behavioural medicine. He is a former recipient of NUI Galway's Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence and is the author of Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology (London: Pearson/Prentice Hall) and Rethinking Psychology: Good Science, Bad Science, Pseudoscience (London: Palgrave).

In 2015, Professor Hughes was made a Fellow of the Psychological Society of Ireland (FPsSI).

As Dean of International Affairs, Professor Hughes has worked cross-institutionally to promote and support the university’s international activities in teaching, research, advocacy, and reputation building. Specific initiatives have included the development of new major strategic collaborations with partner universities in Brazil, China, the US, and Ethiopia, aimed at promoting new opportunities for faculty exchange, research collaboration, student mobility, and capacity building for emerging universities.

Research Interests

Brian Hughes's research and publications focus on psychological stress (particularly its impact on cardiovascular psychophysiology, immunity, and health) and on psychosocial moderators of stress processes, such as social support, cognition, and personality. He also conducts research on the psychology of empiricism and of empirically disputable claims, especially as they pertain to science, health, and medicine.

His work has been supported by several research grants, from bodies such as the Irish Heart Foundation, the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the National Suicide Review Group, the Health Research Board, the Higher Education Authority, and the National Science Centre of Poland. He was a Principal Investigator in NUI Galway's applied social sciences consortium who were awarded the largest ever research grant for the social sciences in Ireland (EUR5.8 million), under Cycle 4 of the Irish Government's Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions.

His PhD students are active in publication and presentation, and their research has attracted of a number of prizes, including Government of Ireland Grants, Faculty Fellowships, and Rotary and Fulbright Scholarships. Upon graduation, they have found employment in universities in Ireland, the UK, the US, and Australia.
