Biography

Dr. Fionnuala Jordan works in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, National University of Ireland, Galway. She works there in a teaching and research capacity. Fionnuala has worked extensively in the area of Psychiatry, clinically in her capacity as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse, as a Nurse Adviser in the pharmacological management of serious mental illnesses and also as a Mental Health Lecturer. She has authored a number of e-learning modules and units delivered at post graduate level. All of which pertain to her area of teaching and research interests. She co-authored an e-module which focuses on the physical health needs of people with serious mental illness. She has collaborated on this subject with colleagues from the UK, namely, Professor Richard Gray, Deborah Dobson and Jacquie White. She has a particular interest in quantitative research approaches, particularly randomised trial study designs. As part of her PhD, she undertook a cluster randomised controlled trial which evaluated the effectiveness of a structured educational reminiscence-based programme for staff on the quality of life of residents with dementia, the DARES Study. She has considerable experience in systematic review methodology, having completed one as part of her PhD thesis. Fionnuala completed her Cochrane Fellowship in 2015 and she is now a member of the Cochrane Collaboration. As a Cochrane exemplar, she has established collaborations across a number of universities both Nationally and Internationally, to include, NUIG itself, GMIT, Queens University, Belfast and the University of Liverpool. She is presently authoring eight Cochrane reviews across four Cochrane groups. She has successfully supervised a HRB Cochrane Fellow Ms Ala Elhelai. Ms Elhelai is now working as a Senior Post Doctoral Researcher at the John Hopkin's Clinic, Baltimore, Maryland.In 2017-2018 Fionnuala was the Masters Project Supervisor for Ms Niamh Hynes, Senior Registrar in Vascular Surgery, Western Vascular Institute/Galway Clinic. For her thesis, a systematic review, Ms Hynes was designated the top performing student on the ChM in Vascular & Endovascular surgery and was awarded the James Hogarth Pringle Medal, at the Royal College Of Surgeons Of Edinburgh.
