Biography:
| Jane Sixsmith RGN, HV, BSc, MA., PhD is a Lecturer in Health Promotion in the Discipline of Health Promotion at NUI Galway appointed in 2000. She was awarded her PhD in 2006 from NUI Galway for a study entitled ‘An evaluation of mass media interventions to promote health’. She previously completed twelve years professional registered nursing experience including community-based practice, which focused on aspects of community and public health. Prior to her appointment to a lectureship she worked as a researcher in the Discipline of Health Promotion. She has an active research profile contributing to regional, national and international research activities and is currently the Director of the Health Promotion Research Centre, a WHO Collaborating Centre. Her research interests include health communication in which she is co principal investigator in an international project mapping health communication activities across EU and EEA countries aimed at the prevention and control of communicable diseases funded by the European Centre for Disease Control with two partner institutions in Scotland and Spain. She is also participating in an FP7 funded project, Intervention Research on Health Literacy (IROHLA) which focuses on improving health literacy for the ageing population in Europe. Other research interests include exploring the use of participatory research processes particularly with children and young people which are documented through various publications and health services research through supervision of a PhD student exploring early intervention services.
