Biography

Deirdre Byrnes is a graduate of University College Cork, where she obtained a BA in German and French, a Higher Diploma in Education, and an MPhil. She was awarded her PhD from University College Dublin. Deirdre was the recipient of a DAAD undergraduate scholarship which enabled her to study at the University of Heidelberg. She conducted much of the research for her MPhil at the University of Konstanz. As a doctoral student, she was the recipient of a DAAD postgraduate research scholarship and spent a year at the University of Potsdam and the Freie Universität Berlin. She was also awarded a postgraduate research scholarship from the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. 
Deirdre is programme director of Legal German at NUI Galway. She teaches the module "Memory in Contemporary German Writing" to Final Year BA students. She also contributes a module to the MA in International Contemporary Literatures and Media.
Deirdre's research interests include GDR literature, post-Wende writing, and memory discourses. She has recently begun work on a new project: "Remembering at the Margins: Marginality and Memorialisation in the New Berlin". She is a member of the NUIG-UL research network Gender ARC: http://www.genderarc.org/
 


Research Interests

Deirdre’s research interests include the writing of Monika Maron, GDR literature, post- Wende writing, and memory discourses. She would be particularly interested in working with students on the following research areas: contemporary women writers in German-language literature, the literature and architecture of the Berlin Republic, and memory discourses. 
She has recently begun work on a new project which explores the politics of memorialization in the new Berlin, focusing particularly on the Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen.

Vice-Dean for the First Arts Experience in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies from 2007 to 2010 This role involved providing support and advice for students in difficulty, informing new and prospective entrants about First Arts at NUI Galway, and liaising with First Year coordinators and with the Examinations Office.

Teaching Interests

Deirdre is programme director of Legal German at NUI Galway. She also teaches on the Final Year BA programme and on the Masters in International Contemporary Literatures and Medias.
