Biography:
| "Intellectual property, ethics and biotechnology, focusing on human-animal hybrids and chimeras. Other research interests include copyright, technology and art." Maureen did a B.A. in Philosophy and English and taught T.E.F.L. in Spain for five years. Subsequently she did a Diploma in Law and a B.C.L. in Cork and pursued a research LL.M. at Warwick University. The title of her LL.M. was “The Linux Operating System: A Socio-Legal Study”. She taught on the Property Law course at Warwick for three years and later took up a lectureship in the University of the West of England, Bristol. There she continued teaching Property Law, eventually becoming module leader of that course. She also taught on the Cyber Law course and introduced a course on the LL.M. in Commercial Law, entitled “Software Licensing and Legislation”. While in Bristol, she took the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education. Maureen was appointed as a lecturer at NUI, Galway in 2006 and served as Interim Head of School from 2008 to 2009. She then took a sabbatical to pursue doctoral studies at Edinburgh University. The provisional title of her thesis is: “Reinventing Patents at the Edge of Reason”. She teaches Industrial and Intellectual Property, English Land Law and Jurisprudence and at masters level, she has designed a course, “Publishing Law: Theory and Practice” for the M.A. in Literature and Publishing in the English Department. She also teaches “Copyright in the Digital Era” to the LL.M. in Law, Technology and Governance and “Copyright and Art” to the M.A. in Arts, Policy and Practice in the Huston Film School. She supervises three Ph.D. students in areas which span open source software, property law and animal rights. Maureen sits on the University’s Ethics Committee and on the Anonymous Marking Board.
