Biography

Molly is a Health Research Board Research Leader. Since January 2014 she has held a full-time research leadership role at the School of Psychology, where she directs the Health Behaviour Change Research Group. Within this group, she and her team apply behavioural science to the development and evaluation of complex interventions to promote healthy behaviour change within health services and to promote public health. All Molly's research is done within multidisciplinary teams. Currently, Molly's main research focuses are in: Diabetes and self-management; Cardiovascular disease and sexual health; Promotion of healthy infant feeding; Promotion of physical activity within pregnant women and others; Interventions targeting health professional behaviour change. Molly obtained an honours degree in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin (1994) and both a Masters degree in Health Psychology (1998) and a PhD (2003) from NUI, Galway. Molly joined the School of Psychology in NUI, Galway in July 2004 as Health Psychology Lecturer, where she has contributed to and directed the MSc in Health Psychology and Structured PhD in Psychology and Health, and established the new Structured PhD in Health Psychology Practice

Research Interests

I am a Health Psychologist with a research focus on answering empirical questions around understanding and changing health-related behaviour and methodological research to improve health behaviour research quality.

I was awarded a prestigious, highly competitive HRB Research Leaders Award to address the national and international gap in the application of Behavioural Science to the development, evaluation and implementation of health behavioural interventions. This award enabled me to establish and direct the Health Behaviour Change Research Group (HBCRG), a national hub and internationally-recognised centre of excellence in health behavioural intervention research. The HBCRG aims to improve population health by developing and promoting an evidence-based behavioural science approach to health behaviour change interventions.

Within the HBCRG, I lead a number of studies of interventions to change health related behaviour. Studies are in areas including: self-management among young adults with Type 1 Diabetes; attendance at structured education programmes for people with Type 2 Diabetes; delivery of sexual counselling within hospital cardiac rehabilitation; interventions to increase physical activity among overweight pregnant women and interventions to promote healthy infant feeding delivered in primary care.

My current research interests include:
    - Developing and evaluating behavioural health interventions.
    - Chronic disease (particularly coronary heart disease and diabetes): self-management and psychosocial aspects.
    - Sexual issues, sexual counselling and chronic illness.
