Biography:

Ricca Edmondson studied philosophy and political theory at the University of Lancaster before writing a D.Phil. in Oxford in the theory of the social sciences. She taught philosophy at universities in Berlin, also working as a translator, before doing post-doctoral research on the sociology of organisations at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development there.

She is now a member of the School of Political Science and Sociology at NUIG, Co-Chair of the Social Sciences Research Centre, and founder of the Galway Wisdom Project. She is member of the Executive Committee of the European Sociological Association and an editor of the ESA's forthcoming journal, The European Journal of Cultural and Political Sociology, appearing with Routledge from 2014.

Her research centres on four interconnected, interdisciplinary areas: the sociality of reasoning and rhetorical argumentation; understanding phenomena connected with ‘wisdom’, and developing new techniques for doing so; issues connected with the life course and life-course meaning; and interculturality, translation and qualitative methods in the social and political sciences. (Please see section on Research for further details.)

Since 1999 Ricca Edmondson has been a member of the Board of Research Network 1 (Ageing) in the ESA; she is also a Board member of the corresponding Research Committee in the International Sociological Association.  On several occasions she has co-organised ESA RN1 international meetings as Chair of its committee. She has also organized a sequence of further conferences and workshops, in Galway and abroad. These include an international conference she organised on Ageing and Values in NUI,Galway in 2006; she is now co-organising the 8th International Conference on Cultural Gerontology, to be held in Galway in 2014.

In 2003 Ricca Edmondson obtained a Senior Research Fellowship from the Irish Council for Humanities and Social Sciences. More recently she has carried out research at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh, and at the Institute of Philosophy in the University of Potsdam. She currently has a DAAD grant to carry out work at the universities of Vechta and Potsdam, Germany.

She is a former editor of The Irish Journal of Sociology and a member of the Editorial Boards of a number of journals, including Ageing and Society, European Societies, Revista Sociologia, the Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies, and Ecopolitics.

Research Interests

Ricca Edmondson’s research sets out to combine techniques from the social and political sciences, philosophy, and the theory of argumentation. It deals with the following interlinked, interdisciplinary themes:

Reasoning and the sociality of reasoning; she uses approaches derived from Aristotelian rhetoric to embrace potentially positive accounts of argumentation rather than concentrating on manipulation and fallacy, though it does not ignore these (particularly where the impact of social and political power on argumentation is concerned, for example in connection with the environment).

This interest has led also to her work on understanding phenomena connected with the excellent forms of reasoning and behaving grasped as ‘wisdom’; she has developed a blend of philosophical and ethnographic methods for elucidating what is going on when people behave in a way that is considered, or can be argued to be, ‘wise’.  This work is also intended to combat ageism by elucidating positive contributions made by people in later stages of the life course.

Concentrating on issues connected with the life course, including the question of life-course meaning, Ricca Edmondson has been a member of the steering committee of Research Network 1 (Ageing) in the ESA since 1999, on several occasions co-organising its international meetings, among many other conferences and workshops. She is also a Board member of the corresponding Research Committee in the International Sociological Association. She organised an international conference on Ageing and Values in NUI,Galway in 2006 and is co-organising the 8th International Conference on Cultural Gerontology in NUIG in 2014.

This work cannot be carried out without a substantial interest in interculturality, translation and qualitative methods in the social sciences. This combination too relies on interdisciplinary techniques for elucidating meaning in different areas of everyday and public life.

Recent international conferences (co-)organised in  these connections include

2012 International Workshop on Wise Practices, Imagination and the Toleration of Diversity, National University of Ireland, Galway; June.

2011 Research Network on Ageing, Conference of European Sociological Association, Geneva, Switzerland; September.

2009 Research Network on Ageing, Conference of European Sociological Association, Lisbon, Portugal; September..

2007 Research Network on Ageing, Conference of European Sociological Association, Glasgow, Scotland; September.

2006 International Symposium on Ageing and Values, NUIG; October.
