Biography

  

Veronica McCauley, PhD is a lecturer in science education at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Her primary degree is in science education, which instigated doctoral research in the areas of self-directed and technology-based learning. Within the sphere of science education, she has carried out research in initial teacher education, interactive learning environments, mentoring, STEM outreach activities and the effective use of technology in teaching and learning at the University of Limerick (Ireland), Harvard University (Cambridge, USA) and at the National University of Ireland, Galway (Ireland).

Veronica is involved in a number of current research projects relating to the effective use of technology in the science classroom, in particular in the area of marine biology and physics education. This research has grown from the recent publication of a Sci-Hook series published in the i-Bookstore. In terms of STEM outreach and engagement, Veronica was one of the core organisers of the first STEM outreach conference in Ireland (2007) and several after, which brought together key stakeholders from across Ireland, the UK and Europe to inform STEM communication within Ireland and to discuss and debate best practice and evaluation. Following on from this, recent publications have drawn upon research in the third space, between science outreach and education, in an effort to explore pedagogical practices both in primary & second level science education and in STEM outreach activities.

Teaching Interests

Veronica's leads the teaching across the science methodology modules. She contributes to the Professional Practice Modules in terms of delivering workshops, and in terms of school placement, she is advisor to several students each year, across PME 1 and 2.  In terms of the Master of Education course, she contributes to the  General Research Methods module and supervises a number of students from each M.Ed. cohort. Finally she supervises a number of doctoral students following NUI Galway's taught doctoral programme.
