Biography

Dr Hunter is a lecturer in mental health nursing and is postgraduate programme coordinator at the National University of Ireland Galway. He worked in a range of clinical settings, delivering CBT and IPT. He has two main research areas; the use of qualitative research in trials and psychosocial interventions use and education in mental health care. Dr Hunter is co-chair of The Qualitative Research in Trials (QUESTS) Centre. The QUESTS Centre promotes high quality qualitative research in trials, undertakes primary research of same and provides education on the use of qualitative research and trials.

Research Interests

My overarching research interest is in psychosocial interventions use in mental health care. I have expertise in qualitative research methodologies, specifically grounded theory and the application of these approaches within trials. I recently became the co-chair of The Qualitative Research in Trials (QUESTS) Centre. The QUESTS Centre has been established promote high quality qualitative research in trials, undertakes primary research of same and provides education on the use of qualitativeread more research and trials. I have collaborated in a range of research projects, including research into women centred care in pregnancy and childbirth through to dementia care and inter-professional learning utilising a wide range of methodological approaches.

Teaching Interests

I currently have a range of teaching roles ranging from administrative/co-ordination roles to module delivery. I am currently Postgraduate Co-ordinator for all specialist taught graduate studies programmes in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. I have a special interest in mental health nurse education in engagement and communication skills. I have significant curriculum development experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. I have been Programme Director for the Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing and undergraduate year leader for 1st year and 4th year mental health. I lead the postgraduate dementia care transforming practice module. As Postgraduate Co-ordinator I have overall responsibility for quality and evaluation of programmes, reporting to the University Graduate Studies Committee and to the NMBI.  I am chair of Programme Board and have been charged with overseeing changes in the structures and terms of reference of this committee along with its amalgamation with the Curriculum Development Strategic Planning Group.
