Welcome  to  Botany  and  Plant Science 

Botany and Plant Science is one of the five Disciplinary pillars of the School of Natural Sciences within the College of Science at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Botany and Plant Science is engaged in teaching and research on Botany and Plant Science. Research areas within the Discipline include plant and algal biosciences, plant evolution, plant genetics, plant epigenetics, plant biotechnology, plant ecology and paleoecology. This includes research areas relating to the environment including freshwater and marine aquatic systems, wetlands including bogs, fens and wet heaths, and the study of long-term environmental change.

Botany and Plant Science is responsible for a 4-year degree course leading to a BSc (Hons) degree in Botany. Botany and Plant Science also contributes to the denominated BSc degree courses in Biotechnology, Environmental Science and Marine Science. The Discipline also contributes to taught postgraduate degree courses in Archaeology (MA degree in Landscape Archaeology) and Commerce (Masters degree in Rural Development). 

Botany and Plant Science has purpose built plant molecular biosciences laboratories, advanced biosciences equipment and plant growth facilities, particularly for research on model photosynthetic organisms. From a field research perspective, Botany and Plant Science at NUI Galway is ideally located for botanical research in both marine (extensive rocky shorelines) and terrestrial plant science (it lies between Connemara and the Burren). Botany and Plant Science members have an active involvement in the Ryan Institute and the Centre for Chromosome Biology. Botany and Plant Science co-operates with a wide range of other Disciplines in NUIG including Archaeology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Education, Engineering, Earth and Ocean Sciences, Experimental Physics, Mathematics, Microbiology, Philosophy, and Zoology.

Botany and Plant Science Research at NUI Galway is supported by funding at institutional (HEA, PRTLI programmes), national (e.g. Science Foundation Ireland, Department of Agriculture, Enterprise Ireland, EPA, Heritage Council, Discovery Programme, Marine Institute, IRCSET-Embark Initiatives) and international levels (e.g. EU Framework Programmes).
