‘ICU FamilyLink’ system provides a secure bi-directional audio and video conferencing call or a “virtual visit.” It enables contact between families, patients and the clinical teams providing care, which would ordinarily be available through close family members physically visiting the patient bedside or attending a family meeting.

Installation is straightforward, however it is important that there is engagement and involvement locally from both clinical and technical teams. The flowchart below provides a step-wise overview of installation and references supporting documents, all of which can be found in the manuals and templates section.

Primary Use Case in UHG

  • Video call between Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and one/more remote family members of an ICU patient
  • Host: Staff or Patient with staff. Video initiated and managed by ICU staff
  • Remote Participants: Family members or external staff
  • Ability for clinical staff to arrange and initiate ad hoc virtual visits 24/7 with minimal availability of administration staff.
  • Design intent: Minimise workload for ICU staff and maximise their sense of comfort with the technology

It is important to note, ‘ICU FamilyLink’ was designed and built specifically for the critical care setting in UHG – some components or approach may require modification dependent on local policies and each clinical setting. Any modification should be carefully tested prior to being used.
