Research Interests
Gerry’s primary research interests focus on the health effects of providing and receiving social support including informal care for older adults in the community. Much of this research is linked by the over-arching question, 'How does the immediate social environment influence health and illness across the lifespan?' In this work self-regulation models from behavioural sciences are used to understand how aspects of social relationships influence health and illness throughout life. The two core research areas that provide the context to much of this work are Behavioural Medicine and Health Psychology. Specific current research questions and interests include:
This methodologically diverse programme of research has been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Medical Research Council (MRC), the British Academy and the British Heart Foundation. Gerry was Chair of the Scientific Committee for the UK Society for Behavioural Medicine Annual Scientific Meeting in 2011, which was held at the University of Stirling in Scotland. He is also currently an elected member of the Executive Committee of the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS) and sits on the Editorial Board of Psychology & Health. From 2011-2012 he was an associate board member of the National Institute of Health Research Health Services and Delivery Research programme. |
