Welcome to the Pathway of Plant & AgriBiosciences

Plant and Agricultural Biosciences innovations have a critical role to play in ensuring future food security and sustainable development through discoveries in Ireland and internationally. Plant & AgriBiosciences have a major focus on preparing students for careers in the vibrant plant and agribiosciences sector.

Your undergraduate BSc degree in Plant & AgriBiosciences will strategically position your career for emerging 'green economy' job opportunities across agribiosciences, biotechnology, breeding, genetics, biochemistry, food, nutrition, bioenergy, agriculture, pharmaceutics, education, biobusiness, sustainable development, cleantech, regulatory affairs and government policy sectors.

Why study Plant and AgriBiosciences?

There are a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees associated with the Plant & AgriBiosciences Research Centre (PABC) at NUI Galway, including:

  • A new agri-oriented degree pathway on Plant & AgriBiosciences (PAB) as a component of the undenominated BSc degree in NUI Galway. Existing BSc students can enter this pathway in year 2, 3 or 4 of the PAB pathway.
  •  For BSc (Plant & AgriBiosciences) students who will seek employment directly after completion of their degree, training is provided in identification of career opportunities in the exciting agri‐biosciences and agri‐food sector in Ireland and internationally.
  • In addition, the AgriBiosciences Research Internship Project within the BSc (Plant & AgriBiosciences) degree pathway (which is run in partnership with Teagasc) provides a platform to facilitate integration of students into the agri‐biosciences sector.

The BSc (Plant & AgriBiosciences)  undergraduate  degree pathway is strongly linked to NUI Galway's Plant & AgriBiosciences Research Centre (PABC) within the Ryan Institute. The PABC consists of over 30 research groups and research partners engaged in advanced plant and agribiosciences innovation (www.plantagbiosciences.org).

For students planning to continue with postgraduate studies, the BSc (Plant & AgriBiosciences)  undergraduate  degree pathway will position students with the knowledge and skills to enter a range of agri-oriented Masters degree programs associated with the Plant & AgriBiosciences Research Centre (PABC).
