Symposium Agenda 2023

The 13th Annual Marine Economics and Policy Research Symposium.
The day will provide participants with an update on a wide range of policy topics related to the marine sector in Ireland. The theme of this year’s event is “Collaborative Marine Policy and Governance”. Sessions on the day will focus on topics such as marine and coastal tourism, maritime spatial planning, marine and coastal environmental protection and the importance of community and stakeholder involvement in marine policy formation.

SEMRU partners on three new EU funded projects

European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) Award.


Project Title: Women in the Blue Economy: Intelligence Gathering and Capacity Boosting [WIN-BIG]. - In association with 12 other European research organisations. SEMRU Participants: Stephen Hynes and Edel Doherty

The WIN-BIG project aims to provide an accurate assessment of the gender status and women's role across the EU blue economy and its associated marine industries. as well as determining the skills gaps preventing women from entering or progressing on the blue career ladder. Surveying across EU sea basins regions will be complemented with available country specific reports to provide an aggregated estimate of the gender balance and capacity gaps in EU blue economy. The project is expected to culminate in a roadmap for capacity building for women in EU blue economy that aims to lay down actions and best practices learned that can be transferable across countries and regions further contributing to raise awareness and develop women’s roles in the EU blue economy.

SEMRU has been successful in application for a Marine Institute funded project

Stephen Hynes and Patricia McHugh have been  awarded a new project from the Marine Institute. Patricia and Stephen signed off on the funding agreement last week. The title of the 4 year award that will fund a research fellow is “Monitoring the Attitudes of Society Towards our Seas” (MASTS)

SEMRU Participates in Closing the Gender Gap in the Blue Economy Workshop

SEMRU participate in workshop on how to close the gender-gap in the blue economy at the 1st Mission Arena organised by Blue Mission BANOS between 14-16 November in Gothenburg, Sweden. The event aims to encourage, engage, and support various stakeholders from the Baltic and North Sea regions to create a carbon-neutral and circular blue economy by 2030, in alignment with the EU Mission Ocean's objectives.
