A Cancer Exercise Programme Designed for You

Exercise and proper nutrition are crucial for recovery from cancer treatment and prevents onset of late emerging effects. The programme is a multidisciplinary programme that spans all types of cancer and aims to increase patient’s health, fitness and quality of life. It combines personalised exercise with proper nutritional advice to maximise your recovery. The programme is flexible and allows you to be in charge. Beyond recovery, the programme will help to transition into a healthy and active lifestyle.

Don't worry about your fitness levels - the programme is personalized and adaptive and is carried out at an intensity appropriate for you and progressed at a pace that allows you to manage and safely alleviate your cancer treatment

Our Approach To Cancer Exercise

We will perform an initial physiologic evaluation that looks at the whole person, your complete  medical  history, the type and phase of treatment you are undergoing or whether you have completed your active treatment phases and your current exercise capacity. Based on that we we design a programme that is personalized for you to maximize the benefits to your health.

You can opt to participate in an online “at home” exercise program or an on-campus exercise program at NUI Galway.

The Exercise Programme

The programme will include a full physiologic assessment of your fitness and a full personalized exercise programme based on your fitness levels and including the following:

  • Cardiorespiratory fitness exercises
  • Strength and endurance Training
  • Balance Training
  • Flexibility and mobility
  • A weekly supervised exercise session (online or on-campus)
  • Nutrition advise, planning and monitoring for healthy weight management
  • Evaluation of well-ness and motivation
  • Participate in the design and development of post-treatment resources

(We have designed the “At home” exercise program delivered online through Zoom, assessment and monitoring to continue to support the cancer exercise program throughout lockdown and inline with the COVID health guidelines)

Special exercise programme and support is provided for reducing the symptoms of treatment and surgery including lymphedema.

Our core treatment sessions are always one-on-one and include individually tailored exercise and nutrition plan. All exercise plans are set at a level appropriate to your diagnosis, treatment and physical condition when you start the programme. Progress is evaluated on a monthly basis.
