Irish Studies offers both taught and research postgraduate degrees.

Is the MA in Irish Studies for me?
Irish Studies is particularly suited to students with a deep interest in modern and contemporary Irish literature, music, history, language and culture. The emphasis in all our programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels is on new approaches to Irish writing, and to Irish music and dance (popular and traditional).

In particular, Irish Studies at NUI Galway is about making connections between and across the disciplines concerned with exploring the making of modern Ireland since 1800 to the present. Our students gain knowledge of Irish literary traditions (in Irish and English), languages, history, sociology and politics, and music and dance cultures that have shaped modern and contemporary Ireland across the island and beyond.

All classes are taught through the medium of English, with translations of Irish language material supplied. Students may submit coursework in either English or Irish.

Irish Studies offers small group teaching in a supportive environment and a programme of study designed to meet the needs of individual students, preparing them for life and work outside the classroom through a range of transferable skills while deepening their knowledge and understanding of modern and contemporary Irish culture.

Our Irish Studies’ Graduate Community

Our MA students have the opportunity to explore their research projects with a wide range of Visiting Scholars that are based at the Centre for Irish Studies each year. They also participate in the monthly Irish Studies Seminar Series, and form part of the wider Irish Studies Graduate Community where MA and PhD students meet and are supported in developing their research skills throughout the academic year.

Our MA Graduates
We encourage our MA scholars to utilise their MA Dissertation as an important stepping stone to further their future career options, and we work closely with our students to help shape and refine their research projects and career goals through their time at the Centre for Irish Studies.

Our graduates have gone on to take up positions in research, teaching, journalism and digital media, public service, international marketing, and in the arts, heritage and tourism sectors, across the island of Ireland, Europe and overseas. Graduates of Irish Studies have also competed successfully for prestigious research funding awards, both nationally and internationally.
