About Us
Welcome to the Discipline of Pathology
Pathology has been an integral part of the teaching portfolio of the School of Medicine since its inception. We are dedicated to delivering high-quality student-focused education to our undergraduate medical and biomedical engineering students at NUI Galway. As a recognised centre for postgraduate training in histopathology, we provide academic training and research opportunities for medical graduates who wish to pursue a career in the field of pathology and its cognate disciplines.
With the appointment of Prof. Grace Callagy in 2004 as the Head of Discipline, the Discipline aimed to develop a world class research portfolio in translational clinical and basic cancer research. By 2015 the Discipline has grown to include four internationally renowned Principal Investigators focused on breast and prostate cancer research with a view to improving patient diagnosis, prognosis and patient outcomes. Our research takes a multidisciplinary approach which combines basic science, pathology, clinical oncology and molecular epidemiology. We provide a highly supportive environment for postgraduates whether they are registered for a MD, MSc or PhD. We welcome national and international students to apply to pursue a postgraduate research qualification with us.
