Biography

I am currently a senior lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. I am a registered general and children's nurse.
I worked in University Hospital Galway, Ireland, the Addenbrookes NHS Trust in Cambridge, UK and Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Dublin. I lecture primarily on the Bachelor of Nursing Degree Programme. I also teach and supervise research at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. I received the NUIG President's Teaching Excellence Award in 2016 and received a further nomination in 2017.

My current research interests are in qualitative research and evidence synthesis, trial methodologies and psychosocial research in dementia. I am Co-Chair of the Qualitative Research in Trials Centre: QUESTS (www.quests.ie ) and co-lead of the Qualitative Research in Trials (QRiT) target group, within the MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership(TMRP). I am also a research associate for Evidence Synthesis Ireland, and a member of the
Emergency Evidence Response Service (EERS) in response to COVID-19.

In line with my interest in qualitative research, I am on the advisory board for the
International Institute for Qualitative Methodology (IIQM) and European Editor for the
International Journal of Qualitative Methods (IJQM).

Research Interests

My primary expertise is in qualitative research methodology, qualitative evidence synthesis (QES),qualittaive research in trials and dementia research. 

I have extensive experience in, and have published on, qualitative case study methodology, qualitative evidence synthesis methodology, data collection, ethics, rigour, paradigms and analysis in qualitative research. I have been awarded a number of research grants to develop expertise in QES, particularly in the field of trial methodology. I have led and collaborated on a number of qualitative evidence syntheses, for example in: personhood in dementia, infant feeding, pulmonary rehabilitation and trial recruitment, with two recently published reviews in the Cochrane Library.  I am a QES trainer and research associate for Evidence Synthesis Ireland.
 
I have collaborated and advised on a number of research projects in the area of dementia care. These include  QES exploring care of people with dementia in acute settings (PI), personhood in dementia (collaborator) and primary qualitative research in truth telling in dementia care and communication with people with dementia. I am a member of the Psychosocial Dementia Research Group and have collaborated with key researchers in this field of research. 
 
I am Co-Chair for QUESTS  (Qualitative Research in Trials Centre), established in 2016 and embedded within HRB-TMRN. The mission of QUESTS is to maximise the integration of qualitative research in randomised trials through support, training and primary research. More recently, I have taken on the role of co-lead for the Qualitative Research in Trials (QRiT) target group, within the MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership(TMRP

As well as securing a number of collaborations on successful bids, including four HRB DIFA grants in 2019, QUESTS members and I have organised and delivered training on qualitative approaches that can be used in trials and Studies Within A Trial (SWAT).   My role in QUESTS includes creating partnerships and research collaborations with prominent researchers in qualitative research and trial methodology.

In line with my interest in qualitative research, I am on the advisory board for the
International Institute for Qualitative Methodology (IIQM) and European Editor for the
International Journal of Qualitative Methods (IJQM).

Teaching Interests

I am currently year leader for fourth year of the undergraduate programme: Bachelor of Nursing Degree (General). I have taught on a number of undergraduate modules including Principles and Practice of Clinical Nursing, Assessing and Promoting Health, Research Methods, Relating to Clients, Care of the Child in Hospital, Physically Ill Adult, Transition to Practice and Biological Sciences (Genetics).

At postgraduate level, I have developed and facilitated units for the blended learning programmes and taught students undertaking the Master in Health Sciences. Postgraduate modules include: Management, Critical Issues in Chronic Illness, Management of Chronic Illness and Advanced Research Methods.

I have supervised students undertaking the Masters in Nursing and Research Masters here in the School. I also supervise students undertaking the Masters in Health Sciences Clinical Education with the Discipline of General Practice.I am currently co-supervising four students undertaking a Doctorate of Nursing Practice.
