David Cheung

I am currently Lecturer in Biophysical Chemistry in the School of Chemistry, National University of Ireland Galway. Prior to this I was Lecturer in Physical Chemistry in the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, University of Strathclyde and a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellow in the Department of Chemistry and Centre for Scientific Computing, University of Warwick. I began my academic career at the University of Durham where I worked in the group of Prof. Mark Wilson. Following this I performed postdoctoral research at the University of Bielefeld (in the group of Prof. Dr. Friederike Schmid) and University of Warwick (in the groups of Prof. Michael Allen and Alessandro Troisi) before beginning my independent career. Outside of science I enjoy films, playing boardgames, running, and the occasional bit of cooking and baking.

Kieran Somers

Dr. Kieran Somers is an Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Research (GOIPD) Fellow in October 2019. His research has historically centred on the development and application of accurate theoretical chemistry models/tools for use in a broad range of chemical engineering scenarios, ranging from atmospheric to combustion chemistry. To date, he has authored 25 peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals, and he has given oral and poster presentations at twenty national and international conferences. Under the mentorship of Dr. Cheung, his two-year GOIPD Fellowship (entitled “Towards a Fundamental Understanding of Abnormal Protein Folding through Multiscale Computational Chemistry”) will focus on understanding the role of nanoparticle structure on the protein fibrillation process, via the use of quantum chemistry and molecular modelling methods.
