Student Levy

In April 2021, a Students’ Union referendum passed which reduced the student levy, payable by all NUI Galway students, from €224 to €140.

The University is always conscious of the cost burden of higher education in Ireland and, as in all universities, a levy has been an important support for projects and services which Government does not fund, not just here, but across the higher education sector.

NUI Galway also adds to the investment in services funded by the student levy, to offer our students a high standard of supports alongside the teaching experience.

Following the levy change, the University has prioritised an increase of funding to the Student Health Unit to more than €540,000 (an increase of 13%), to enhance and develop important healthcare services for students. Find out more about it here

We also prioritised support for Clubs and Societies for 2021/22 and have ensured that the University funding allocated to these activities remains the same as last year. In addition Clubs and Societies will receive an increase of €186,000 based on the levy changes.

The levy changes mean that the amount of funding going directly from the levy to the Students' Union has increased from €410,000 to €653,000 (an increase of 59%). Further information on the breakdown of the levy funding is available on the SU website.
