Welcome to the Discipline of Medicine

The Discipline of Medicine has broad ranging functions in undergraduate education of medical students, postgraduate teaching and research.  The principal goals of the Discipline are to educate the health care providers of the future, provide state of the art healthcare to patients and to generate the clinical practice of the future through research.  Many of its staff members have clinical appointments ensuring that the academic programme participates in health service delivery in partnership with Saolta University Health Care Group.

Discipline of Medicine

The discipline offers postgraduate opportunities for MSc, PhD and MD students in biomedical sciences, and subspecialties of Medicine. 

Members of the Discipline are involved in basic science research, clinical research and epidemiological research across the spectrums of:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Haematology
  • Respiratory Medicine
  • Renal Medicine

Research undertaken by members is aligned to the priority research areas of the university and staff participate in research as part of multidisciplinary teams in research institutes and centres such as NCBES, CURAM, REMEDI, The Martin Ryan Institute, Galway Diabetes Research Centre, Galway Neuroscience Centre and the Clinical Research Facility.
