The School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences hosted an event for the International Day of Women in Mathematics 2023 on Friday 12th May.
This day was chosen to honour the birthdate of Maryam Mirzakhani , who, in 2014, became the first woman to win the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics.
The event took place in the Anderson Lecture Theatre from 12.30-1pm with some light refreshments followed by the screening of the documentary “Secrets of the Surface: the mathematical vision of Maryam Mirzakhani”. The documentary is a wonderful biopic of her life, with her contributions explained by leading mathematicians and illustrated by animated sequences.
