Performance and Screen Studies

‌‌COURSE OVERVIEW

This programme presents two internationally-recognised academic disciplines – Performance Studies and Screen Studies  – and draws them together to create a unique subject that involves the lecture-based study of Drama, Film, Television, social media, sporting events and sportsmedia, gaming, streaming platforms, political activism, and more.  It has a strong focus on employability through an emphasis on skills development for the Creative Industries, both in Ireland and internationally.  Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland recently revealed that €500 million was spent in 2021 in the Irish economy across film, television drama, documentary and animation production, the highest spend ever achieved supporting over 12,000 local jobs, with growing demand for new graduates with relevant qualifications.  In addition, Drama, Film, and Theatre Studies will be introduced as a new Leaving Certificate teaching subject from 2024 and our programme aligns directly with this new subject for those wishing to pursue a teaching career at second level.  The programme also provides the opportunity for students to apply to transfer into the denominated degree programme in Drama after First Year (subject to exam performance and availability of places), should they wish to do so.

Please note modules (particularly options) may change from year to year.

All classes are delivered in lecture format and are assessed through continuous assessment and project work.

Students spend an average of 12 hours a week attending lectures for this subject and also undertake independent study both individually and in groups.

Erasmus/Study Abroad and/or work placement options may be available depending on what subjects/degrees you take Performance and Screen Studies in conjunction with. This will also be dependent on overall capacity/places as well as ongoing academic performance in this and other subjects.  Students completing this subject will be well equipped to succeed in the Creative Industries.
