Behavioural change is essential to address the most pressing challenges facing society today, including health and wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

The Health Behaviour Change Research Group (HBCRG) was established in January 2014, funded initially through a Health Research Board (HRB) Research Leadership Award. The HBCRG is a national hub and internationally recognised centre of excellence in health behavioural intervention development, evaluation and implementation.

Our vision

Our vision is to improve population health by developing and promoting an evidence-based approach to health behaviour change interventions.

We aim to

  • Lead the behaviour research agenda, by identifying and pursuing behavioural research priorities which impact on health.
  • Develop and evaluate complex interventions, using evidence-based behavioural theory and employing theory-linked behaviour change techniques.
  • Advance the science and methods of health behaviour change by critically evaluating the evidence for different behaviour change approaches and exploring and developing novel behavioural trial methodologies.
  • Build capacity by establishing a critical mass of excellent researchers, delivering innovative training and creating a vibrant learning environment, at NUI Galway and through linking in with other international leaders in the field.
  • Impact on health outcomes through embedding an implementation science approach and engaging the public, healthcare professionals and policy makers throughout all stages of the research process.
