Types of Users

Contributors can add and edit content but NOT approve it for publication.

Typically, the University of Galway doesn't use this level of user.   Most editors are moderators.

Moderators have the ability to create web pages, add content of any kind, and approve it for publication.

Power users can do everything that moderators can can also:

• Manage users in their groups
• Create/Modify building blocks used by other users. i.e: Content types, Lists, Navigation objects, and Page Layouts
• Manually publish content
• Publish top-level pages (output URIs starting with /)
• Load images to the media library in bulk
• Permanently delete content from the recycle bin
• Configure Media Library Auto-Publishing
• Manage Media Library Category Access Rights

These extra privileges bring the potential to accidentally break the website.

Being a power user does not mean you can edit every webpage in the CMS - that is possible but it has to be granted in addition to power user privileges.

The university's website is its most effective marketing and communication tool.  Because of this, the Marketing and Communications team are ultimately responsible for any content on www.nuigalway.ie and therefore reserve the right to edit any part of the website, if necessary.   To facilitate this, most M&C staff are power users (with access to all pages).

Administrators have full control over the CMS and can do things that Power Users cannot, such as:

• Manage all users (not just those in their own groups)
• Create new groups
• Configure the CMS
• Run reports
• Update & Approve workflow content in 1 step

There are relatively few administrators across the campus - most are ISS personnel; however there are some administrator in Marketing and Communications and also in the library. 

Even though multiple people have sufficient privileges to administer the CMS, doing so requires extensive specialist knowledge.   In practice, CMS configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks are carried out by a Evan Ryder (University WWW Technologist), who is responsible for its provision, 24x7 availability, security and upkeep, along with all other aspects of the University's web service.

• Editing rights, in the CMS, are normally assigned to groups of users.
• Groups can contain any number (or type) of users.
• Individual users can be in as many groups as they need.
• Each group is granted access to everything their members need to edit.
• Group membership can be managed by any power user or administrator in that group and if access rights ever need to change, ISS can change them once, affecting all group members instantly.

It is possible for a group to contain only 1 user; however we recommend that you always have at least 2 people who can edit your content (Your unit's web content is your unit's responsibility as ISS do not provide a web editing service, so we cannot make web edits for you - even if your only web editor becomes unavailable).
