Fully Funded PhD Opportunity at the University of Galway’s School of Law on the Deprivation of Liberty

PhD Scholarships

A fully funded PhD position is available to work on a doctoral thesis on the Deprivation of Liberty. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr. Róisín Mulgrew  and become a member of the Crime, Punishment and Rights Research Cluster.

It is open to candidates to define their own PhD topic, but the identified topic must fit within the parameters of research related to liberty deprivation. All methodological approaches and methods are welcome.

Entry criteria

Essential

A 2:1 Honours (or equivalent grade) at the undergraduate level and either a postgraduate degree in law (or related discipline) or relevant work experience.

Desirable

A 1st Class Honours (or equivalent grade) at the undergraduate level and a postgraduate degree in law (or related discipline).

Funding

The scholarship is available for a maximum of 4 years. It will cover full fees for the successful candidate, in addition to a stipend of €19,000 per annum.

Condition of Funding

The successful candidate must be in a position to join the PhD Programme before the end of February 2024.

The successful candidate must register on a full-time basis.

The successful candidate will be required to apply for Irish Research Council (IRC) and University of Galway scholarships in the first year of their degree.

  • a PhD proposal (setting out the project’s aims, objectives, research questions, methodological approach and methods, and a research schedule)
  • a CV, 
  • an academic writing sample (e.g. article, dissertation), and
  • two letters of reference
