The Galway Neuroscience Centre has been a partner in the global “Brain Awareness Week” event for over 12 years. The aim of these events is to increase public interest and engagement in how the brain works and communicate research findings to the public and inspire the next generation of brain researchers.

In 2023, the GNC organised 2 outreach events for Brain Awareness Week, The national heat of the International Brain Bee competition and the My Amazing Brain Exhbition.

This is the third time that GNC members, Prof John Kelly and Dr Sinead King, have organised the Irish Brain Bee competition. The Brain Bee was conducted virtually, and 41 Transition Year students from across the country participated. The winner of the competition was Jocasta McDonagh from St. Paul’s school in Headford who will represent Ireland at the International Brain Bee World Championship to be held virtually in August in Washington, DC. We were delighted to be able to host the “My Amazing Brain Exhibit” in person this year, the first time since 2019. The event attracted over 300 transition year students from local schools, who learnt about how the brain and nervous system work. The exhibit consisted of interactive displays where our visitors learn about the brain in a hands-on way.

For more information on the event see News and Events page here.

In 2022, the GNC organised a day of online talks, activities and fun quizzes about the brain for transition year students. Participants learned about the day in the life of a neuroscientist. Experts discussed neuroscience techniques such as EEG, MRI and cognitive testing and how these techniques are used in clinical research to help us to understand the brain and how they relate to illness. They learned about novel treatments, such as prevention, cognitive remediation, and other new treatments in clinical neuroscience research.
