Research
Neuroscience research is truly multidisciplinary at the GNC, bringing together all principal investigators and clinicians at the University of Galway and affiliated Hospitals with interest in advancing the understanding and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. We aim to improve understanding of the pathogenesis of neurological and psychiatric diseases, to identify potential novel drug targets, to develop innovative and commercialisable therapeutics, and ultimately to bring these therapies to the patients. The Centre for Pain Research (CPR) and the Centre for Neuroimaging, Cognition and Genomics (NICOG), further facilitate research in these specific areas of neuroscience. Within the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Medical Devices, CÚRAM, neuroscience is firmly embedded within the Neural and Musculoskeletal Research Pillar, and GNC PIs are also funded investigators within the SFI Research Centre for Chronic and Rare Neurological Diseases, FutureNeuro. The GNC was designated an International Centre of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (CoEN) in 2012 following peer review.
Neuroscience and pain researchers at the University of Galway have attracted highly competitive funding (European Research Council, H2020/Horizon Europe, SFI, Health Research Board, Irish Research Council; ~€34.2 million currently active). Research spans bench to bedside via collaboration between basic scientists and clinicians in anaesthesia, neurology, pain management, psychology, and psychiatry. Multiple clinical trials in the areas of pain, bipolar disorder, stroke, psychosis and autism are currently ongoing.

Research within the GNC is divided into three main themes, with many groups research interests spanning several thematic areas due to the cross cutting technologies and approaches.
Neurodegenerative Disorders and Neuroregeneration

Neurodegenerative disorders are a heterogeneous group of disorders that are characterized by the progressive degeneration of the structure and function of the nervous system. Although certain treatments may help relieve some of the physical or mental symptoms associated with neurodegenerative disorders, slowing their progression is not currently possible, and no cures exist.
Neuropsychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Neuropsychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Disorders result from both genetic and environmental factors and have great impacts in terms of global burden of disease ranking fifth globally in causes of disability. These disorders are associated with considerable morbidity and increased rates of mortality due to suicide and ill health.
Pain

Chronic pain is a leading global health issue affecting up to 1 in 5 of the adult population. Due to the lack of biomarkers, chronic pain is highly variable, difficult to diagnose, displays high co-morbidity with physical and psychiatric illness and difficult to treat.
