Global Women's Studies at NUI GalwayThe programme builds on a long-established tradition of Women's Studies at NUIG. It also complements existing strengths of the
School of Political Science and Sociology in development, environmental politics, feminist and gender analyses, globalisation, human rights, international relations, post-colonial studies as well as expertise in the sociology and politics of particular countries and regions in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.

![]() LUNCH TIME SEMINAR SERIES FOR SPRING 2012 The next event in the Global Women’s Studies Lunch Time Seminar Series for Spring 2012 will be on Wednesday, 15 February 2012. GENDER ARC SEMINAR SERIES The next event in the NUIG-UL Gender ARC Public Lecture Series 2011-12 will be Prof. Diane Negra (UCD), speaking on Gendering the Recession in Ireland, on 17 Feb 2012 at 1.15-2.15pm at the Moore Institute (NUIG). LAUNCH OF REPORT ON OLDER WOMEN WORKERS' ACCESS TO PENSIONS GWS together with Irish Centre for Social Gerontology at NUIG and Queen’s University Belfast is pleased to announce the launch of the CARDI-funded research report on Older Women Workers’ Access to Pensions: Vulnerabilities, Perspectives and Strategies on Friday, 24 February 2012, 11am to 2pm, at the National University of Ireland, Merrion Square, Dublin. Inez McCormack, former president of ICTU and a well-known women’s rights leader, will launch the report. In addition, a panel of key stakeholders will discuss the research findings and implications for pensions policy. DAY SCHOOL ON CRITICAL ISSUES IN GENDER AND GLOBAL HEALTH GWS will hold a Day School on Critical Issues in Gender and Global Health. This course considers current global health crises created by the worldwide drive to privatize healthcare, the rise of disease pandemics, particularly HIV/AIDS, as well as other complex emergencies. WORKSHOP ON GENDER ANALYSIS OF GOVERNMENT BUDGETS The Public Policy and Gender Cluster in the Institute of Business, Social Sciences and Public Policy is pleased to announce a one-and-a-half-day workshop on Gender Analysis of Government Budgets on 8-9 March 2012. Prof. Diane Elson, an internationally renowned expert in gender analysis of budgets, will lead the workshop. The workshop is limited to 20 participants so reserve a place early. 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN The Global Women's Studies Programme hosted a series of events to mark the 16 Days of Activism to end Violence against Women, linking International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (Nov 25) to International Human Rights Day (Dec 10). DUVVURY LAUNCHES UNFPA REPORT ON WORLD POPULATION Dr. Nata Duvvury spoke at the October 26th launch of UNFPA’s report, State of the World Population, 2011: People and Possibilities in a World of 7 Billion. Jan O’Sullivan, Minister of State, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, launched the report. Dr Jacqueline Mahon, Senior Policy Advisor, Global Health and Health Systems, UNFPA, introduced the report and Dr Duvvury commented on the report, based on her extensive international development expertise. The event was organised by the Irish Family Planning Association and held at the Shelburne Hotel, Dublin. GLOBAL WOMEN'S STUDIES STUDENTS AWARDED IRCHSS POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS Caroline Forde and Aura Lounasma, PhD students in the Global Women's Studies programme in the School of Political Science and Sociology, were each awarded an IRCHSS postgraduate scholarship in the 2011 round. These highly competitive and prestigious scholarship have a success rate of less than 15% and are open to PhD students studying at Irish Universities in the Humanities and Social Sciences. RELIGION, GENDER AND HUMAN RIGHTS CONFERENCE An international conference, funded by the European Science Foundation and Linköping University, and sponsored by NUI Galway, took place on 21-25 June 2011 in Sweden. Entitled Religion, Gender and Human Rights: Challenges for Multicultural and Democratic Societiess, the conference was an initiative of the Gender and Public Sphere thematic group within Gender ARC. The conference aimed to move gender from the periphery to the centre of debate on the role of religion in public and political life in democratic and democratising multicultural societies.
