Global Women's Studies at NUI GalwayThe programme builds on a long-established tradition of Women's Studies at NUIG. It also complements existing strengths of the
School of Political Science and Sociology in development, environmental politics, feminist and gender analyses, globalisation, human rights, international relations, post-colonial studies as well as expertise in the sociology and politics of particular countries and regions in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.

![]() Applications are invited for 2013-2014 for the MA in Gender, Globalisation and Rights at the Global Women’s Studies Centre. The MA offers a unique opportunity to combine advanced study of global issues and human rights, through a practice-oriented, gender lens. A small number of partial scholarships are available on a competitive basis. The MA programme is available on a full-time (one year) or part-time basis (two years). For more details, click here. PUBLIC LECTURE - U.S. PERSPECTIVE ON GENDER, WORK AND THE LIFE COURSE A public lecture by Prof. Debra Street (U of Buffalo, New York) entitled "(n)Ever (re)Productive: A U.S. Perspective on Gender, Work and the Life Course" is being held on 14 May 2013 at 1 pm at NUI Galway. The lecture is part of a meeting of the International Research Network on the Gender Analysis of Employment, Retirement and Pensions for Older Workers being held at NUIG. GENDER ARC RESEARCH SEMINAR SERIES, 2012-13 The Gender ARC Research Seminar Series for 2012-2013 featured Prof. Marianna Fotaki (U Manchester), Deirdre Byrnes (NUIG), Marieke Van Den Brink (Radboud U), Emily Logan (Children’s Ombudsman), Kate White (U Ballarat), Phil Dine (NUIG), Anne Byrne (NUIG), Patricia Moran (UL), Ekaterina Yahyaoui (Irish Centre for Human Rights, NUIG), and Lorraine Kelly (Spanish, NUIG). Global Women's Studies and the Feminist Society at NUIG presented a series of events to mark the annual global campaign "16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women", linking International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (Nov. 25th) to International Human Rights Day (Dec. 10th). The final event in the Global Women’s Studies Lunch Time Seminar Series for Spring 2012 was held on Wed 25 April when Odette Clarke (History, U Limerick, and GWS Visiting Research Associate) spoke on 'Divine providence and resignation': Caroline Wyndham-Quin (1790-1870) and her emotional management. For more details, click here. GWS held a Day School on Critical Issues in Gender and Global Health in February and March 2012. This course considered current global health crises created by the worldwide drive to privatize healthcare, the rise of disease pandemics, particularly HIV/AIDS, as well as other complex emergencies. For more information, click here. Gender ARC, The NUIG-UL Advanced Research Consortium on Gender, Culture and the Knowledge Society, hosted a Public Lecture Series in 2011-12. GWS, together with the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology (NUIG) and Queen’s University Belfast, have produced a CARDI-funded research report on Older Women Workers’ Access to Pensions: Vulnerabilities, Perspectives and Strategies. Former president of ICTU Inez McCormack launched the report in Dublin on 24 February 2012.

The Public Policy and Gender Cluster in the Institute of Business, Social Sciences and Public Policy held a workshop on Gender Analysis of Government Budgets on 8-9 March 2012.
