PhD Scholarship Opportunities

External and University-Wide Funding Opportunities

Researchers entering Structured PhD programmes at NUI Galway on a full-time basis should be aware of the following funding opportunities:

The Irish Research Council awards a substantial number of postgraduate research scholarships each year through the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme. Full funding is provided at a rate of €18,500 p.a. plus a contribution to fees, including non-EU fees, up to a maximum of €5,750 p.a. and eligible direct research expenses of €3,250 p.a.

Hardiman PhD Scholarships are internal funding awards made by NUI Galway. Full funding is provided for four years at a rate of €18,500 p.a. plus fees.

Non-EU students who are not in receipt of any other scholarship that supports the payment of full Non-EU fees are eligible to apply for the PhD International Merit Scholarship Scheme at NUI Galway. If successful, this scholarship award reduces course fees from the full international level to EU level.

PhD students who are in receipt of prestigious scholarships from EU Marie Skłodowska Curie schemes or China Scholarship Council Scholarships that do not support the payment of fees are eligible to apply for this waiver of fees at NUI Galway.

Information on additional external and university-wide scholarship opportunities can be found here. Opportunities specific to international students can be found here.
