PhD Scholarship Opportunities
External and University-Wide Funding Opportunities
Researchers entering Structured PhD programmes at NUI Galway on a full-time basis should be aware of the following funding opportunities:
The Irish Research Council awards a substantial number of postgraduate research scholarships each year through the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme. Full funding is provided at a rate of €18,500 p.a. plus a contribution to fees, including non-EU fees, up to a maximum of €5,750 p.a. and eligible direct research expenses of €3,250 p.a.
Hardiman PhD Scholarships are internal funding awards made by NUI Galway. Full funding is provided for four years at a rate of €18,500 p.a. plus fees.
Non-EU students who are not in receipt of any other scholarship that supports the payment of full Non-EU fees are eligible to apply for the PhD International Merit Scholarship Scheme at NUI Galway. If successful, this scholarship award reduces course fees from the full international level to EU level.
PhD students who are in receipt of prestigious scholarships from EU Marie Skłodowska Curie schemes or China Scholarship Council Scholarships that do not support the payment of fees are eligible to apply for this waiver of fees at NUI Galway.

Three Research-based Doctoral (PhD) Scholarships are available to work on the ERC–funded project PIETRA. The doctoral scholarships, fully funded by the European Research Council, have a start date of September 2022. The successful candidates will be housed at NUI Galway, within the Moore Institute under the supervision of Prof. Anne O’Connor and a Graduate Research Committee. The candidates will be part of a team of researchers including post-doctoral researchers and research assistants. The three scholarships available are:
