‌The University Guidelines for Research Degree Programmes have been updated as at June 2017 and apply to all PhD/MD and Research Masters students.

  •    QA245 University Guidelines for Research Degree Programmes

    Updates
    6. The PhD Examination Process
    6.3.2 Approval of Examiners
    External Examiners

The external examiner shall be an expert of international standing in the field of study of the thesis.  A short curriculum vitae of the external examiner will be provided, by the supervisor, to the College to accompany the online request for the approval of Examiners.

External examiners should normally be appointed from outside the Republic of Ireland. Because of the University’s alliance with the University of Limerick the external examiner shall not be drawn from the University of Limerick, except with the approval of Standing Committee, under clearly defined and exceptional circumstances, where the expertise required cannot readily be found elsewhere.  The external examiner must be independent of the university and of the conduct of the research and must not have any real or perceived conflict of interest in examining the thesis. The external examiner, with his/her letter of appointment, will be asked to declare any potential conflicts of interest that he/she may have.

Diversification in the range of persons appointed as external examiners is encouraged, though it is recognised that there may be a particular reason for availing of the expertise of a particular extern for a number of theses within a given period. Colleges must submit an annual report listing all external examiners approved and their affiliation for review by Standing Committee of Academic Council.

The same changes were also made to the MD Examination Process. Section 7.2

    6. Próiseas Scrúdaithe an PhD
    6.3.2 Faomhadh na Scrúdaitheoirí
    Scrúdaitheoirí Seachtracha

Saineolaí a bhfuil seasamh idirnáisiúnta aige/aici i réimse staidéir an tráchtais a bheidh sa scrúdaitheoir seachtrach.  Cuirfidh an stiúrthóir curriculum vitae gairid an scrúdaitheora sheachtraigh ar fáil don Choláiste in éineacht leis an iarratas ar líne i dtaca le Scrúdaitheoirí a fhaomhadh.

Ba chóir scrúdaitheoirí seachtracha a cheapadh as taobh amuigh de Phoblacht na hÉireann de ghnáth. De bharr chomhghuaillíocht na hOllscoile le hOllscoil Luimnigh ní bheidh an scrúdaitheoir seachtrach bainteach le hOllscoil Luimnigh, seachas le cead ón gCoiste Seasta, i gcásanna eisceachtúla a bheidh sainithe go beacht, más rud é nach féidir an saineolas riachtanach a fháil in aon áit eile.  Ní mór don scrúdaitheoir seachtrach a bheith neamhspleách ar an ollscoil agus ar stiúradh an taighde agus ní féidir leis/léi aon choimhlint leasa, dáiríre nó measta, a bheith aige/aici i scrúdú an tráchtais. Iarrfar ar an scrúdaitheoir seachtrach, sa litir cheapacháin, aon choimhlint leasa a d’fhéadfadh a bheith aige/aici a dhearbhú.

Moltar éagsúlacht a bheith sna cineálacha daoine a cheaptar mar scrúdaitheoirí seachtracha ach tuigtear go bhféadfadh cúis mhaith a bheith ann saineolas scrúdaitheora sheachtraigh áirithe a úsáid do roinnt tráchtas i dtréimhse áirithe ama. Ní mór do Choláistí liosta bliantúil de gach scrúdaitheoir seachtrach faofa agus a c(h)leamhnacht a chur ar fáil do Choiste Seasta na Comhairle Acadúla le hathbhreithniú.

Cuireadh na hathruithe céanna seo i bhfeidhm ar Phróiseas Scrúdaithe an MD. Cuid 7.2
