eduroam (Educational Roaming) facilitates roaming educational users obtaining wireless internet access with their laptops at other member sites by authenticating with the user credentials they normally use at their home location. See www.eduroam.iefor more information on member sites.
Who can use the service?
NUI Galway is a full eduroam participant offering both:
- A service for NUI Galway staff/students wishing to use eduroam in other eduroam enabled institutions
- A service to visitors to NUI Galway from other eduroam enabled institutions who wish to connect to the NUI Galway wireless network.
Prerequisites required for the service
Visitors to NUI Galway
Visitors must have their wireless clients configured to use WPA2 with AES encryption and have tested their authentication before arriving onsite. The Service Desk does not provide support for visitors client configuration and visitors must contact their home institution for support.

The configuration has been tested and is supported on

XP versions below SP3 are not supported. WPA2 requires at least SP2 and may work.
The only supported client is the wireless client built into the Operating System. There is no support for third party wireless clients but these should work if parameters as indicated in the setup instructions below are followed.

1. Select eduroam for the available Wi-Fi networks and click Connect
2. You will be prompted for you Username and Password.

1. Download and run the executable eduroamwin7wpa2v1.exe, accepting default prompts.
2. Once the exe file has installed successfully click on the network icon on the bottom right of the screen.
3. Select eduroam and click Connect.
4. Authenticate with useriduds.nuigalway.ie and CASS password.
5. Once authenticated click on the taskbar icon to view the connection.
2. Download and run the executable eduroamXPv5.exe, accepting default prompts.
3. Once the exe file has successfully run, a message appears in the taskbar (as shown below).
4. Click message and enter your useriduds.nuigalway.ie and password leaving domain blank (as shown in the image below).
5. Once successfully authenticated, you will be see the following message on the taskbar.
1. Check the device is running IOS 4.3.5 or higher.
2. Download via file transfer or email the config file eduroamv6.mobileconfig to your device.
3. Run the config file and click Install to run the profile.
4. Enter user details when prompted.
5. Accept certificate when prompted.
IMPORTANT: ensure it relates to NUI Galway.ie as below
1. Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Wi-Fi settings.
2. Under Wifi Networks select Add Wi-Fi network.
3. Enter details as outlined below.
Identity: Enter your NUI Galway UDS User ID
Anonymous identity (Leave Blank)
Wireless password: Enter your NUI Galway UDS Password
The eduroam website contains comprehensive documentation covering other operating systems and 802.1x supplicants. Refer to these documents to manually configure your client.
To complete these manual installation based on the HeaNet documentation you'll need some information specific to NUI Galway. The documentation contains generic information as in column B but you will need to replace with with NUI Galway specific information as in column C. If any of the details in your WiFi profile are incorrect, then your authentication will fail and you will not gain wifi access via eduroam.

The NUIGWiFi service is designed to provide students, staff and registered guests with easy access to the Internet. You connect to NUIGWiFi automatically and authenticate with your user ID and password via your web browser e.g. Internet Explorer.
Conference participants must contact the Conference Office for temporary access to the wireless network.
Guests visiting the University may obtain a temporary account via their staff sponsor from the .

How do I access NUIG Wifi?
- Students - Login with your Campus Account User ID and password.
- Staff - Login with your UDS account i.e. your staff email username and password.
The NUIGWiFi service is a 802.11 b/g network. Authentication takes place via Web re-direction to an authentication portal. Ports open on the service are www,https,dns,ftp,ssh,nat-t,ipsec vpn, port 587 (outbound) and ports above TCP 1025. Note that port 445 is blocked for NUIGWiFi. Additional ports can be requested via the Service Desk. Requests will be considered in light of best practices with respect to network security.
Important: Wireless clients connecting to this service do have some firewall protection via the University firewall but it is strongly advised that all clients install appropriate personal firewall and and .
Note: Peer-to-peer traffic is not facilitated.
All Operating Systems should work but note that Information Solutions and Services does not currently provide support for Microsoft Vista.
All browsers should work. Information Solutions and Services recommend Internet Explorer as your browser for the wireless service.
Browser setting should be Automatic or No Proxy. In Internet Explorer, from the Tools menu, choose Internet Options and click the Connections tab. Click LAN Settings. Automatically Detect Settings should be the only box ticked.
If you cannot see NUIGWiFi in your wireless connections, please restart your computer as a first step and ensure that your wireless card is enabled/switched on.
When the NUIGWiFi service is visible, the browser will automatically be directed to the wireless authentication page. If you do not see authentication page, please note the following:
- Client must have valid Domain Name Server (DNS) assigned. How to check IP configuration for NUIGWiFi ( Windows XP / Windows 7 / MAC)
- Check IP Configuration - ensure that the device is getting a valid IP address.

- If you connect to the wireless network but don't log in within 20 minutes, you need to disconnect form the wireless network and re-connect.
- If the authentication page does not load, ensure your browser homepage is a standard http:// address e.g. http://www.nuigalway.ie (not https:// or other protocol).
- If you are unable to authenticate with your credentials to NUIGWiFi, please verify that you can login to other services on-campus e.g. PC Suite computer.
- If you are connected to NUIGWiFi but you cannot view the authentication page, there may be a browser or user profile issue on the computer. It is recommended that you try an alternative browser e.g. MS IE, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome.
- If you continue to experience difficulties connecting to WiFi , please visit your manufactures website to ensure you are running the correct driver for your wireless card.
All users are allocated disk space on the network servers. This space is referred to as your U: Drive and can be used to store your files from one session to another. It is your responsibility to maintain this disk space. All users are allocated 100Mb of disk space.
Note: Undergraduates, your U: Drive is cleared down before the start of each academic year - be sure to take copies of any important files on your account before the end of each academic year.
How do I access the U:Drive in the PC Suites?
Once logged in double-click My Computer and then the U:Drive icon.
In order to see how much disk space is available to you, double-click My Computer and then the U:Drive icon. From the File menu, select Properties. Your free space will be displayed graphically as the magenta area in a disk space pie chart. Do NOT save your work to the Desktop, as files saved there will not be available to you when you next login.
File Naming Schemes
Under Windows XP file names can be up to 32 characters. File names should be as succinct as possible and meaningful identifiers e.g. ThesisCh1 for the first chapter of a thesis. The non-alphanumeric characters / : * ? < > " | cannot be used in file names.
A three character file extension (which is usually hidden) generally describes the file type. Common file extensions are .txt for text files, .xls for Excel spreadsheets and .doc for Word documents.
Directories and Sub-Directories
A directory is a collection of files in a given area. As you create files they are created in your top-level directory in your home area (U: drive) unless you specify otherwise. A directory can contain sub-directories that can be used to organise files. Files with a common theme can be put in one sub-directory. For example all files relating to Project1 could be stored in a sub-directory called project1. Similarly files relating to Project2 could be stored in a sub-directory called project2. This makes the management and finding of files easier as you create more and more files in your home area.
To create a sub-directory, double-click My Computer and then the U:Drive icont. From the File menu, select New and then Folder. A new folder (directory) will be created. To bring order to your folders, you can click on View menu and select Arrange Icons. Icons (in this case folders) can be arranged by name, type, size, and date depending on your preference. To see what is contained within a given folder, double-click on that folder. To close any window, click X at the top right of that window.
Backing up your files
It is impossible to stress how important it is for you to backup your files from your home area to USB/CD on a regular basis. There are a number of ways to back up your work:
- From the File menu, select Save and save to the U: drive.
Select the Save As command to save the file with a different name. This will give you two copies in your U: Drive.
- Use the Drag & Drop facility within My Computer to copy files from the U: drive to USB.
Click once on the file in question, hold down the mouse button whilst dragging the file over to the USB drive icon and then let go of the mouse button. A copy will be made.
- In My Computer, from the Edit menu, select Copy when the file you want to copy is selected (left click). At the USB drive icon, from the Edit menu, select Paste.
How does space get used up?
Your U: Drive contains many files. Some of these files are automatically created for you when you start certain applications. You create most of the files when you save your work. e.g. Word documents are saved as .doc files. Many applications create temporary files whilst they are being run. Temporary files usually have the file extension .tmp or start with the ~ character. If an application which creates temporary files, closes down unexpectedly, i.e. crashes, you may well end up with a number of temporary files in your directory, which you will have to delete manually.
Deleting unwanted files
As a regular exercise you should delete all unwanted files from your U: Drive. Be careful not to delete files you may need again. It is in your own interest to manage your disk space. Shortage of disk space may also cause some applications difficulty in starting or they may crash whilst you are using them. To delete files from your U: Drive, click on the file you want to delete. This file will now be highlighted blue. Now either press the Delete key on the keyboard or select Delete from the File menu. To delete multiple files, hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard whilst clicking on the files you want to highlight for deletion. Click on a file a second time to remove the highlighting. Before the files are deleted you will be asked to confirm your request.
How do I access the U:Drive off-campus?
Note that https://myfiles.nuigalway.ie/ is not available from the PC Suites.
Getting extra disk space
If, after you have deleted all unwanted files, you still require additional space you may apply for additional disk space by contacting the Service Desk.
Note: Undergraduates, don't forget that home area files are cleared down before the start of each academic year. Be sure to take copies of any files you wish to keep.
It provides a selection of PC Suite printers to users connected to NUIGWIFI network. It supports laptops running at minimum:
- Macintosh: Snow Leopard 10.6, Leopard 10.5, Tiger 10.4
- Windows: 2000 Service Pack 4, XP Service Pack 2, VISTA Service Pack 1, Windows 7.
Who can use the service?
Staff or students that are connected to the NUIGWiFi network.
What do I need to access the service?
- PrintCredit - it can be purchased from print kiosks or via the online print credit system.
- Wifi connection on campus
- Wireless Print Package*
You MUST install a wireless print package. Click the relevant link for details on
(i) how to install the wireless print queue package and
(ii) how to print to a wireless print queue*.
The wireless print package will install two print queues on your laptop: Wireless_BW_Release, Wireless_Colour_Release.
Important - Print jobs sent to wireless print queues
Jobs sent to wireless release queues don't print directly They are held in the wireless release queue for 24 hours until released by you from a print release station. Click this link for full details on print release stations and their location.
* Note: Your Campus Account User ID and Password are required to submit print jobs to the Wireless Release Queues and to release them from print release stations.
Removing the Wireless Print Package
Wireless print package can be removed by following these instructions. This typically only takes a few minutes to complete.

Client issues connecting to Eduroam or NUIGWiFi
If your device does not connect to Eduroam or NUIGWiFi or indicates that you are connected but you still cannot access the Internet then:
- Check you have an IP address on the wireless network.

- Check your proxy settings for all your internet browsers, making sure that there is no proxy set. Click here for instructions on how to configure your proxy settings for each browser. - If you connected to Eduroam previously and can no longer connect please remove the Eduroam profile and reconnect
How to remove the Eduroam profile on Windows 7
1) Go to Start and click on Control Panel
2) Click on Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel window
3) Click on Manage wireless networks on left panel
4) Manage Wireless Networks window will appear, and here you can see all available wireless network connection profiles. Select the profile Eduroam and click Remove to delete the selected profile. Then reconnect to Eduroam by following these instructions

How to Forget a Wireless Network in Windows 8.1, from the Networks List
In Windows 8.1 you can remove/forget a wireless network after you try to connect to it. The network has to be in range and visible to your laptop or tablet. If it isn't, you can't remove it using this method. If the network is available, here's how it’s done:
In the Networks pane, select the network you want removed and press Connect.
If Windows 8.1 can't connect to it, you will see an error message and a button that says "Forget network".
Press on it and the network is removed. You can reconnect to the network as if it were a newly detected network.

eduroam Troubleshooting Tips
Please configure and test eduroam access on campus in NUI Galway before travelling to a remote location. If eduroam does not work on-campus it will not work off-campus.
Check the eduroam information pages for the location to which you are travelling. Each eduroam location publishes information locally. Ensure that the location follows the eduroam access standards.
